Faith-Owned Land Could Help Address Charlotte's Housing Shortage

 

At the Faith in Housing Lunch and Learn on March 18, city officials, faith leaders and housing partners explored how faith-owned land could become part of the solution to Charlotte's housing shortage. Participants heard examples from local projects already underway, and learned about new technical assistance grants of up to $30,000 for faith-based organizations that are ready to explore affordable housing on their property.

Fair Housing Month: Know Your Rights
April is Fair Housing Month, a reminder that safe, fair and equal access to housing matters. Residents can visit the City of Charlotte’s Fair Housing page to learn more about housing protections, resources and community education opportunities. Housing & Neighborhood Services is also helping residents better understand basic housing health and safety standards through its new Minimum Housing Code video featuring Jerry Green, Code Enforcement Division Manager. The video explains what the code covers, common misconceptions, and what renters, landlords, property managers and neighbors should know if there may be a violation.

Energy Saver NC Rebates Now Available in Charlotte
State-run rebates can help income-eligible homeowners and renters pay for energy upgrades. Residents can start with Homeowners Managing Efficiency Savings (HOMES), then consider Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR). The program runs until 2031 or until funds are exhausted.

 

Mecklenburg County Energy Assistance Programs
Mecklenburg County offers energy assistance programs to help eligible households avoid utility disconnections and reduce housing instability. Available programs include the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP). Residents can review eligibility requirements and application instructions online or call 704-336-3000 for more information.

City-Supported Housing You May Pass Every Day (District 4)
City-supported housing is already part of many neighborhoods and often looks like any other apartment community from the street. One District 4 example: Charlotte Robinsdale (10001 Margie Ann Dr, Charlotte, NC 28213). Explore affordable housing programs and resources.

Community Updates

 

Community Conversations with CMPD Chief Estella Patterson
At two recent community conversations, residents had the opportunity to hear public safety updates from CMPD Chief Estella D. Patterson and service area leadership, ask questions and share concerns directly with city leaders. The meetings were held March 3 at Cokesbury United Methodist Church and March 5 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, with members of HNS's Neighborhood Engagement Services team also in attendance.

District 1 Town Hall

Opportunities and Ways to Get Involved

 

MYEP: One Opportunity Can Change Everything
A new City of Charlotte video features Maayan Eaves and Jeems Pearson, two former Mayor's Youth Employment Program interns who are now thriving as city employees. Their stories show the lasting impact a summer opportunity can have on a young person's future. Employers and young people can subscribe to The Future Crown, the Office of Youth Opportunities' youth newsletter, to stay connected to updates and opportunities.

 
EmpowerTech for Community Leaders
 

EmpowerTech: Free Digital Skills Workshops
Residents can build digital skills through free, standalone workshops that include hands-on lab time. Dinner is provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop if they have one. Upcoming sessions include April 28 on productivity tools and May 26 on tech tools for better meetings.

Pollinator Habitat Registration Program
Housing & Neighborhood Services is sharing information about the city's free pollinator habitat and naturalistic landscape registration program with residents and community partners. Property owners with qualifying, well-maintained habitats may be eligible to register and, once approved, qualify for an exemption from the nuisance vegetation ordinance. Residents can learn more and register at cltgov.me/habitatreg, and partners can use the outreach toolkit to help spread the word.

 

Earth Month Cleanups
Keep Charlotte Beautiful has several volunteer opportunities planned for April, including Spring Break Pollinator Garden PlantingsCorridors of Opportunity Cleanups and Clean the Queen during Earth Week. These events give volunteers a chance to support cleaner, greener neighborhoods across Charlotte throughout the month.

 

Cheer on Carolina Ascent FC and Support Keep Charlotte Beautiful
Join Keep Charlotte Beautiful for Carolina Ascent FC's Non-Profit Night on Saturday, April 11. Each ticket purchased through KCB’s special link provides $5 directly to Friends of Keep Charlotte Beautiful, the program’s nonprofit fundraising wing, with an option to add an extra donation at checkout. Come out for a fun evening and help support cleaner, stronger communities across Charlotte.
