THE BFA AND MFA CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAMS AT BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY (2/26/2000)
DESCRIPTION:
One of the oldest established programs in the country, Creative Writing at Bowling Green State University offers both BFA and MFA degrees, and has an outstanding record of graduate success in publication and employment. The program emphasizes the fine arts element of its degree, providing intensive workshops of limited size, with
comprehensive education in craft and knowledge of the discipline. This studio experience is complemented by English and interdisciplinary courses. The writer's experience at BGSU is enriched by program activities: undergraduates edit BGSU's literary journal, Prairie Margins, organize the BFA reading series, and participate in all cultural events of the MFA program. To enhance career opportunities, MFA students receive training and teach a range of undergraduate courses, as well as serve on the editorial and production staff of the national literary magazine, Mid-American Review. Non-teaching fellowships are available on a competitive basis. The Program hosts a Visiting Writers Series in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Arts. Nationally-known writers, such as Marge Piercy, C.K. Williams, Stuart Dybek, Grace Paley, Stephen Dunn and Rick Moody, visit the campus to read their works and meet with faculty and students. Faculty and graduates of the MFA program have won such awards as the Yale Younger Poets Award, the Guggenheim, NEA Individual Artist Fellowships, the Iowa Short Fiction Prize, Willa Cather Prize, Bobst Award, the Bluestem Award, the National Contemporary Poetry Award, and the AWP Intro Journals Project.
