For Joan

The reason I keep mentioning that Broomfield voters, at the statewide election, voted 62% in favor of the city/county is because this is the bottom line. If Broomfield voters did not want a combined city/county, they would have voted accordingly. There are always debates before election results are in. But, election results speak for themselves.
As was noted elsewhere on this board, the Broomfield city council does not have the authority to place anything on a statewide ballot. Any citizen group could have asked the general assembly to do so or could have taken the petition route. You say people were misinformed. I disagree. But, take a look at some of the things CVELG's members are saying on this board and ask yourself are these things factual. For example, there's a statement that Broomfield residents were promised a new school district. That's not true. There are statements that taxes will have to be higher than originally estimated. This is not true. There are inferences that big businesses supported the city/county amendment so they could control Broomfield. Not only is this not true, it is absurd. What is also being overlooked is that there is ample opportunity for debate between the time something is placed on the statewide ballot and the election date. As a matter of fact, this is what CVELG is saying regarding its petition.
I believe our foregathers fought wars to preserve our freedoms and our right for self-government. And, I believe Broomfield's desire to be a combined city/county is consistent with the principles of self-government. I agree with you that Broomfield becoming a combined city/county will not have any negative impacts on you.

For Adrian

Two men collide in their quest to be mayor and you jump to the conclusion it is all about the city/county. You think this because you would like to believe it is true. Such is not the case.
Be careful what you label as unconstutional. You are wrong. Denver is the only other combined city/county in Colorado. Is the assessor elected in Denver? No. Are the positions of county commissioners and city council combined in Denver? Yes. The constituional amendment is not unconsitutional.
What makes you think the mayor of the city and county of Broomfield will be one of the most powerful positions in the Denver area? This position pays $400 per month.
Unchecked development? No zoning controls? It is obvious you know very little about Broomfield, but profess to be the expert on all matters large and small. You are not.
If the scientific community used your method of reasoning and deduction, we would have no advancements. We would just have science fiction. And, fiction is what your post is.

To BBW

BBW, you miss the point. The issue for me in this entire matter is the process in which it occurred. I have lost faith in our senators and legislators. They did not ask enough questions and I am sure that if this same matter was given the time and attention it deserved, they would have voted NO.

BF city officials stated they were acting as citizens when presenting their case during the hearings. However, I will just bet that if they were truly, just citizens, they would have been laughed at during the hearings. They used their own political status to gain an element of trust and then proceeded to distort information during a hearing. Is that what you want running Broomfield?

Why did Ref C win? Its called a lot of political propaganda. Just talking to residents of BF now, they state that had they known now what all this was about, they never would have voted yes in the first place.

On the issues of big corporations funding political campaigns. I have a very big problem with this. Yes businesses should be concerned about the local politics of the city and local government. However, they don't kick in that kind of money because they want to be nice, they do it for a reason.

Interlocken's reason was to build the NW Beltway. How wonderful to remove Boulder County out of the picture!

Why didn't BF decide to just go with one of the larger counties instead of going through the trouble of creating their own county?

To BBW - City funds were spent

Earlier, BBW posted the following:
"Oct 27, 1999
FYI. No City of Broomfield funds were used for the City and County of Broomfield election campaign."

I posted a response which did not appear on the main screen (too many levels deep, I guess), so I'm re-posting it.
"Oct 28, 1999
Your statement is blatently incorrect. Consider:
1. On 2/24/98, city staff was directed to prepare ammendment for the ballot - was this free?
2. Paulson and Associates was retained by the city to represent them in the pursuit of a County - was this free?
3. At one time, fliers advertising where to send contributions for CBLG were distributed in City employee paychecks - highly questionable and also not free!
4. Only 2 or 3 days before the election the City Bulletin was distributed to all homes in Broomfield - it was a clear advertisement for Ref. C and even mis-quoted the wording of the 1996 advisory question (using the word "pursue" rather than "consider") - was this also free?

There are many other examples, but this should be enough -- in fact, it is more than enough!"

I would like a response from BBW or any Broomfield supporter. Broomfield funds were clearly spent at taxpayer expense.
