Pawtucket Earth Day cleanups to be held on Saturday, April 27

PAWTUCKET – Pawtucket will celebrate Earth Day this year on Saturday, April 27 with a series of cleanup sites from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. around the city, free Earth Day logos on T-shirts, new perennial plantings and a luncheon for volunteers. Participants are also invited to contribute to a gallery of recycled art for display in the community room or attend a demonstration by New Urban Farmers on making art from recyclable items.

Registration for volunteers will be held beginning at 9 a.m. in the community room at Galego Court, Weeden Street, where the luncheon in cooperation with the Pawtucket Housing Authority (PHA) will be held at 1 p.m. Gloves and bags will be available (bring rakes and planting tools).

Bring a clean T-shirt to have it custom printed with the Earth Day logo by New Urban Farmers. Free water bottles will be distributed courtesy of the Narragansett Bay Commission. Other sponsors include Navigant Credit Union, Keep America Beautiful and Green Penguin, which will recycle old computers and TVs.

Donations are being sought of perennial flowers or other plantings, such as iris, day lilies, daisies or hosta plants that will be planted by volunteers. Donations may be dropped off at 483 Weeden St. weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or brought on April 27. (For more information, contact Lindsay at 401-721-6080 or Arthur Plitt at 401-369-1918).

Arthur Plitt, of the Neighborhood Alliance of Pawtucket (NAP) and the Friends of the Moshassuck (FOTM), said he expected even more volunteers and cleanup volume than last year, when more than 200 people gathered over 20 tons, donating more than 1,000 hours.

The various neighborhood cleanups and sponsors are:

• Galego Court and     Pond, Weeden Street, by the PHA, NAP and FOTM.
• 560 Prospect St., by     the PHA and NAP.
• Payne Park, at     Jefferson and West avenues, by the Woodlawn Neighborhood Association and     NAP.
• Mineral Spring     Avenue at San Antonio Way at the Moshassuck River, by FOTM and NAP     (gathering at Galego Court and walking to the site).
• Ten Mile River     Greenway in Slater Park, gathering at the sponsoring Pawtucket Boys &     Girls Club, 1 Moeller Place, off School Street, at 9 a.m. (picker tools     available)
• Anchor Recovery     Community Center, 249 Main St., which will focus on downtown.

The city Department of Public Works will pitch in by picking up the bags of trash filled by Earth Day volunteers. DPW Director Lance Hill reminded residents the weekend is also a good time to gather their yard waste, for pickup on their regular trash pickup schedule. Due to heavy volume this time of year, not all yard waste put out on the regular collection day may be picked up that day but it may be left at the curb until the recycling truck routes catch up with it.

Hill noted that yard waste (grass, tree limbs, leaves and plants) must be placed in composting bags or barrels only. Tree limbs must be no larger than 3 inches in diameter and no more than 3 feet in length, and tied in small bundles.
