Cherokee Gardens, Viglini Unit

Cherokee Gardens, a tree-shaded area with gently rolling hills and winding roads, was designed in 1925 as a Louisville neighborhood by the landscape architectural firm of Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts. The area is between Lexington Road and Seneca Park, bounded on the east and west by Cressbrook subdivision and Cherokee Gardens West. It is two seperate subdivisions developed at the same time by Olmsted Brothers - the Viglini Unit and the Fairfield Unit - with seperate sets of deed restrictions. The Viglini Unit has one hundred and sixty-seven homes placed on approximately seventy-one acres. Eight streets run through the Viglini Unit: The Garden Drive, Rainbow Drive, Barberry Lane, Sunnyside Drive, Sunset Road, Beals Branch Drive, Poppy Way and Lilac Way. An annual assessment pays for tree, turf and stone curb maintenance in the commonly-owned green areas, and for other amenities, such as special street signs, holiday tree lighting, and gatherings of residents. Funds from Viglini assessments, currently seventy-five cents per one hundred square feet of land, are administered by three annually-elected trustees. The trustees are charged with the preservation of the Olmsted beauty of the neighborhood by seeing to it that the deed restrictions are adhered to and by keeping the commonly-owned property in good condition.
