Saturday, August 10, 2002, marked Central City?’s 1st Annual Roots of Detroit Festival, which received rave reviews from metro Detroiters. From blues to avant-garde jazz, over 20 bands performed continuously for 12 hours on two separate stages. Local Detroit Artists Ed Vogel, Jeanne Poulet, Karl Sneider, Greg Stephens, Ray Wells, Lester Lashley, and Georgette Jones donated their time and talent to conduct some really cool arts & crafts projects for the kids.
Music lovers crowded E. Milwaukee, between Beaubien and Hastings Street, some staying until the fun ended. Festival organizers were pleased to hear several requests from attendees urging them to host the Roots of Detroit Festival again next year. Despite a couple of bugs that have to be worked out, CCA?’s Board of Directors gave their approval to continue to support the festival. Planning for the next festival will begin January 2003.
Special thanks to everyone that supported Central City?’s 1st Annual Roots of Detroit Festival. With out your support the festival would still be a concept.
