JANUARY 2005
January International Citizens Police Academy
The purpose of this 12-week course is to educate the public about the police services delivered by the Louisville Metro Police Department in order to foster understanding and community support for the department. This class will cater to the new residents of Louisville Metro. Free.

January Spanish-Speaking Citizens Police Academy
The purpose of this 12-week course is to educate the public about the police services delivered by the Louisville Metro Police Department in order to foster understanding and community support for the department. This class will cater to the Spanish-speaking residents of Louisville Metro. Free.

January 8 Neighborhood Planning College
The goal of this 8-session course is to empower effective citizen participation in the neighborhood planning and development review processes. Sessions will include presentations, small group exercises, and projects done by the participants. Send a letter to your Metro Council representative asking them to nominate you for this course. Classes are on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. – noon. The 2005 dates are January 8, January 22, February 5, February 19, March 5, March 19, May 14 and May 21. Free.

LCON is a Louisville Metro-wide grassroots organization of neighborhoods established to promote and ensure the physical, social, cultural, environmental and economic development of Louisville Metro neighborhoods. LCON meets at Metro United Way (334 East Broadway) in the Community Room on the 2nd floor. The monthly meetings alternate between the 2nd Tuesdays and Thursdays of the month starting at 6:00 p.m. for Dinner and the program begins at 6:30 p.m. Free.

January 20 Spring Neighborhood Institute
Neighborhood Institute, established in 1987 by the Louisville Community Design Center, provides leaders of grassroot neighborhood associations with the skills, tools, resources and connections to lead effective neighborhood organizations. This 12-week course meets on Thursdays with a bus tour on Saturday, February 12. Free.

January 22 Neighborhood Conflict Resolution 101
Neighborhood Conflict Resolution is a 3-hour training session to develop skills to help negotiate an outcome that is workable for everyone. Whether you’re facing challenges as an individual or as a neighborhood association, this session will help you identify sources of conflict, develop strategies to get everyone to sit down and talk, and move you towards win-win solutions. This class is held at the Just Solutions Training Center, 410 West Chestnut Street on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – noon and is taught by Just Solutions Mediation Services. Free.

January 25 Volunteer Management Training
The Center for Nonprofit Excellence and Metro United Way are teaming up to provide a 6-course training program on Volunteer Management. The workshop sessions will be on the fourth Tuesday of each month at Metro United Way on the following dates in 2005: January 25, February 22, March 22, April 26, May 24 and June 28. $50 if a member of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence.

Neighborhood LINK is a national program that provides free websites to not-for-profit associations. The Louisville Metro Department of Neighborhoods offers training assistance to neighborhoods so they can establish and maintain their free Website. The training sessions are held Monday evenings at the main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The workshop is free, but registration is required due to limited computer terminals.

Experience neighborhood networking over dinner! These Monday night collaborative sessions consist of guest presenters and peer-to-peer sharing. Strengthen your neighborhood organization by attending a Neighoborhood Tool Box Tuesday training session. Topics will range from How to Run an Effective Meeting to Membership Brochures and Collecting Member Dues. Classes are held on Tuesday evenings in March at Memorial Auditorium, 970 South 4th Street from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Topics will vary each session on March 1, March 8, March 15, March 22 and March 29. Registration fee is $5 and scholarships are available.

Every organization should review its bylaws periodically. When was the last time your neighborhood association or group looked at yours? If it’s time for a tune-up, then join attorneys from the Legal Aid Society’s Community Development Program for an informative bylaws refresher course. Learn more about the role bylaws play in an organization, basic provisions that bylaws should contain and options you may want to consider. This Wednesday evening workshop is presented by the Legal Aid Society and runs from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. This class will be repeated on Saturday, April 16. Free.

May 25-28 Neighborhoods USA (NUSA) Conference
NUSA is an international organization representing neighborhood groups, government officials and organizations committed to improving our neighborhoods through the exchange of ideas. Annual conference registrants will have the opportunity to attend workshops that will encourage new thoughts and ideas. Neighborhood Pride Tours will be offered that will exemplify the results of insight, hard work and neighborhood dedication. The 2005 conference will be held in Sacramento, California. Conference registration runs around $100.

September 15-17 Regional Neighborhood Network Conference
The Regional Neighborhood Network Coalition (RNNC) is an organization of 18 cities in 5 states (Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee) that has sponsored a conference for and about neighborhoods since 1987. The Louisville Department of Neighborhoods was instrumental in forming this coalition and hosted the first conferences. The conference is run by neighborhood folks for neighborhood folks, and specializes in giving attendees the tools to take back to their neighborhoods and continue to improve them. The Louisville Metro Department of Neighborhoods takes a busload of neighborhood leaders to this conference each year. All neighborhood leaders are invited to attend. The 2005 conference will be in Muncie, Indiana. The conference registration runs around $100. To receive a scholarship for your conference registration and transportation, write your Metro Council Representative.
