Hey I remembered this month.

Sorry folks that I forgot an article last month, but here is another great article brought to you by your Parish Nurse.

In light of the 2 recent football deaths, one of which was definitely caused by the heat, here are some tips and symptoms to look out for to keep you safe the rest of the summer.

Certain people are at greater risk of heat related problems such as older adults, people who are overweight, and people born with an impaired ability to sweat are at high risk of heat stroke. Other factors include dehydration, alcohol use, cardiovascular disease and certain medications.

The signs and symptoms of heat stroke include
1.) Temperature may be above 104
2.) Rapid heartbeat
3.) Rapid and shallow breathing
4.) Increased or lowered blood pressure
5.) No longer sweating
6.) Irritability, confusion, or unconsciousness
7.) Fainting, which can be the first sign in older adults.
Some of these signs and symptoms can be the precursor or be heat exhaustion and should be taken as a warning sign of impending heat stroke.

If you suspect heatstroke,
1.) Move the person out of the sun and into a shady or air-conditioned space.
2.) Dial 911 and ask for EMS.
3.) Cool the person by covering them with damp sheets or by spraying with cool water ( outside hose). Direct air onto the person with a fan or newspaper.

Stay safe in the sun by taking these precautions:
1.) Drink six to eight ounces of water every 15-20 minutes, DON'T wait until you feel thirsty.
2.) Start slowly. It takes about a week to get used to exercising or working in the heat.
3.) Work out when it?’s cooler, morning or evening
4.) In the heat of the day, head for the shade, perform your workout inside or hit the pool.
5.) Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothes with "wicking" material
6.) Be especially careful on humid days, IF THE HEAT INDEX IS ESPECIALLY
HIGH, don't risk exercising outside.
7.) Avoid hot and heavy meals.

Keep looking, it?’s coming. . . . . the health information board.
