Help Plan Our Walk for Autism!!

Walk Now for Autism is the signature fundraising event for Autism Speaks. The SNE Walk Now will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2007 at Roger Williams Park. Our planning committee meets monthly from February through September to plan for this special event. Meetings are held at the Boyden Library in Foxboro, MA 7Pm-8:30PM; additional meeting dates are July 11, August 15, and September 12, 2007. The 5th Annual SNE Walk Now for Autism Kickoff Luncheon will be held Thursday, July 19, 2007 at the Providence Marriott Hotel 12-2PM. Featuring guest speaker Dr. Barry Prizant, Ph.D CCC-SLP who is internationally recognized for his extensive contributions in research and educational programming for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. All members of the community are invited to attend this informative, inspirational, and FREE event to learn about Autism Speaks and how you can participate in our upcoming Walk Now for Autism.

What is Autism?

Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person's lifetime. It is part of a group of disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASD). Today, 1 in 150 individuals is diagnosed with autism making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is 4 times more likely to strike boys than girls. Autism impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors such as obsessively rearranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe.
