- Award To Aid Youth Fishing & Conservation Program Development

FORT WAYNE – The Fort Wayne Community Fishing Club (FWCFC) has reeled in a big one. The Indiana Youth Institute ( http://www.iyi.org/ ) has awarded the club’s Youth Fishing and Conservation Program a $5,000 Youth Investment Award for extraordinary work on behalf of children and youth.

According to Ephraim Smiley, who heads the FWCFC's youth fishing program, the grant will be used to provide fishing clinics, trips for youngsters and supplies for the club’s youth fishing derbies.

The non-profit Fort Wayne Community Fishing Club’s annual Fishing Derby at Reservoir Park draws hundreds of local youth to the park for a weekend of fun, fishing and learning. Club members stock Reservoir Park Pond with fish and invite children and families to enjoy a day of fishing. Children are provided a fishing pole, bait, snacks and a lesson in fishing and the environment. This year’s Fishing Derby is scheduled for June 4th and 5th at Reservoir Park. The event is free.

“It’s our privilege to recognize this program. Ephraim Smiley and the FWCFC's Youth Fishing and Conservation Program demonstrate that healthy youth development starts with our interests and passions,” said Bill Stanczykiewicz, President and CEO of The Indiana Youth Institute, which supports programs and organizations serving youth. “Each of us can take our hobbies and share them with kids in our families and in our communities in ways that make a lifelong difference for children and youth.”

The FWCFC's Youth Fishing and Conservation Program is one of only 12 grant recipients selected out of some 140 applicants from across the state.
