Kiwanis Club of Golden K - Foothills
Club History

Happy Birthday July 1
Kiwanis Club Golden K Foothills was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Alameda West. The Charter date of the club is July 1, 1976. The first official meeting was held July 8, 1976, at Pizza Casa Restaurant, 275 Union Blvd, Lakewood, CO. The charter was presented on August 23, 1976. Membership when the charter was presented was 21 members.

The first president of the club was Robert E. Dunkley. He served until October 1, 1977 (a year and a half). During the year 1977-1978, five new members were added to the club. Leon Piper was one of the new members & he is still an active member of the club.

Due to two deaths and others moving away the membership dropped to 12 during the year 1977-1978. However, the low point in membership came during 1978-1979 when it fell to a total of only 8 members remaining. However, by years' end, membership was back up to 13 members and a 95% attendance. During the year 1982-1983 there were 23 members and by the end of the 1983-1984 year it was up to 25 members . Foothills became a Class 11 member of Kiwanis on September 13, 1984. Today our membership is comprised of 57 active members and three honorary members.

Early in the life of the club, it was established by the club members that the programs presented at the club meetings would be informative & interesting discussions by public persons. This seems to be the preferred type program today. We occasionally have personal travelog programs presented by one of our members showing pictures and telling us of their travels. At one time, we had members giving us a 10-15 minute resume of their life and adventures. However, it has been a long time since we have had one of them presented.

Foothills has received several awards for its activities. Many members have received special recognition for their activities. The most notable member award was that received byTed Livingson. In the year 1988-1989 he received the Colorado Certificate of Service to Seniors and was the State's representative to the National Commission on aging which was held at the White House in May 1989. He has twice had articles in the newspapers for his bicycle program.

During 1978, Golden K Foothills was incorporated by the State of Colorado as a non-profit organizaiton. Due to death of members and a change of secretary of the club this status was allowed to lapse. Thanks to the work of Leon Piper, the President for 1980-1981, the incorporation status was reinstated.

Also we owe thanks to Ted Livingston for keeping our Club alive. Ted was President for two consecutive years (1989-1982 and 1982-1983). He held the presidency for the two terms since no one would take it for the second term. Wendell Ellsbury, President 1979-1980 made a custom- designed wooden case for storing the club bell in between meeting dates. It is the one still in use today. Ken Jones made a wooden box for storing the public address system small parts. it was placed in service June 13, 1996.

During 1980-1981, there were only 9 members of Foothills Kiwanis Club but they gave $730 to charitable organizations primarily promoting children's projects. This year they started collecting recyclable aluminum cans. During 1984-1985 they started collecting the penalty (25 cents) for not wearing your club pen to club meetings it was dropped for a year or two and restated later by Forrest Wagers.

Golden K Foothills has sponsored two new Kiwanis Clubs -- Breckenridge and Shadow Mountain during 1989 and 1990. Also, the club helped promote the Golden-K club at Longmont.

January 16, 1986 Foothills organized a Key Club at Chatfield High School in the unincorporated area of Jefferson County. In 1966, the club sponsored a new Key Club at the Dakota Ridge High School. Ben Weimer has been the club's representative at Chatfield since its inception. Dave Milek is the club's representative at Dakota Ridge.

During its more than 20 years of life, the club has participated in many different projects to help children and senior citizens. Most of the projects we have given of our knowledge, time, and labor to help make them successful each year. However, we do make cash contributions when the need is obvious and our money is available. A list of club projects is given on the page entitled Club Service Projects.
