Families & Allies Working Together Creating Future Plans Notes on a Future Plan 1. A Future Plan begins with an initial meeting of people you trust and who have agreed to help you make decisions about your future. At the meeting, we will develop an action plan. The Future Plan sets into motion an ongoing problem-solving process that takes into account your dreams (what you'd like to accomplish) and asks the other participants what their dreams for you might be. It also looks at "worst fears," or what you wouldn't like to have happen in your life. The "focus person" of the group, or the person for whom the plan is being developed, may accept or reject the group's ideas. Families & Allies' role is to act as a facilitator to help the group to work together. 2. A Future Plan considers the different areas of a person's life and what makes a "good" life: things like a desired level of community participation, choices in life, skills in taking care of one's self, and getting respectful support to accomplish goals. A Future Plan helps a person to create a vision for themself, and then figures out with the help of the group how that vision can be accomplished (the action plan). 3. As far as logistics go, the Future Planning meeting can be 2-3 hours, depending on the size of the group. There is no exact size it has to be -- anywhere from 4 to 20 people can be invited. The main thing is to choose people you'd like to listen to your dreams and who will offer feedback. 4. A plan is the beginning of a process in which the group might be involved in implementing it, although they do not have to commit to being involved beyond the first meeting. Often a Circle of Support, or a smaller group of family or friends, grows out of the initial meeting and stays involved over time.
