Neighborhood Schools

The local Public School site(Washington School) is directly adjacent to the ''Flowers of Marengo'' neighborhood. As such, the neighborhood association does a local ''service project'' there once a month to keep our neighborhood looking good. The Washington School grounds consists of 3 campuses - the ''Upper Campus'' at the south east corner of the grounds is a ''middle school'' for grades 6 through 8. The ''Lower Campus'' at the south west corner of the grounds is an ''elementary school'' for grades K through 5.

There also is ''Preschool'' provided on the elementary school campus. From preschool through 8th grade, the enrollment is approximately 1500 students. At the north west corner of the grounds is ''Washington Day Care'' which is separate from the preschool at the elementary campus. The north east corner of the grounds is a track, and playing field, used by not only the students, but also the Pasadena Recreation department for soccer activities, as well as by the community. The school also provides after school and weekend activities, programs, instruction, arts, dramatic arts and tutoring. Presently about 150 students are involved in the after school tutoring program.

Pasadena Christian School is just one block east of the Washington school campus. It is a K through 8th grade program, and is expanding for preschool and daycare. They presently have 538 students enrolled. They offer scholarships to assist low income families in attending if they desire private education with more spiritual emphasis than is typically provided in the public schools.

Omowale Ujamaa Northwest Community School is less than 1/2 a block southwest of the Washington School, and uses an historic electric substation building just north of the La Pintoresca Library and Park. It is a small private school for younger age children.

Just north of this school, the History Fire Station building is being used by Akebulon Cultural Center, and provides additional learning and cultural opportunities for the Community.

Just one block west of ''Flowers of Marengo'', ''Bright Faces Child Development Center'' offers educational opportunities for Preschool age children.

High School age students living in this area may choose between any of the three high schools in the City of Pasadena; John Muir to the west, Pasadena High School to the east, or William Blair to the south. Each of these schools has typically had a good reputation and are well respected by long term residents. Muir is about a mile drive. Blair is about 3-1/2 miles drive. PHS is about 3-1/2 miles drive. These schools can be readily accessed by bicycle, or by public transportation or private car. There also are students that choose a ''skateboard'' as a means of transportation.

In addition, some ethnic congregations share facilities with some of the congregations listed above, and about a dozen other congregations border the Washington Revitalization area. Pasadena is well know for its church involvement With over 100 congregations, ranging in membership from less than 50 to almost 5000, and worship attendance ranging from a dozen to 3500 plus.

Seating capacity of the various worship chapels, sanctuaries and worship centers in Pasadena cover about the same range, from a couple dozen to over 5000. If you live in the area and want to be involved in a faith community, it is highly probable that there would be several good choices where you would feel welcome, could grow & serve, be needed, and would ''belong''.
