Thirsting for Answers on Watering Restrictions? Look No Further.

Jul 10, 2002

As everyone is aware by now, we do not live in Nebraska or Texas and we ARE experiencing a drought here in Colorado.
On July 1, 2002, the Arvada City Council approved Mandatory Watering Restrictions because of contract obligations with Denver Water and the need to assure that adequate water supplies are available next year should this unprecedented drought continue.

The Mandatory Watering Restrictions include:

Irrigation of a property must follow the every three-day watering system based on the last two digits of your address. (See the newspaper for information on your watering day)

Irrigation is limited to a maximum of 3 hours on a property for the watering of sod materials.

Irrigation is permitted before 9 am and after 6 pm to reduce evaporation.

The hand watering of vegetable gardens, flower gardens, trees and shrubs is permitted once per day. Hand watering can take place before 9 am or after 6 pm. Hand watering of lawns is not allowed. (hand watering = holding a hose in the hand or using a watering can)

Personal vehicles may be washed on the property?’s designated watering day. However, the owner must use a nozzle on the hose that turns off automatically to prevent wasting water.

Washing of sidewalks and driveways with a hose is considered wasting water and is prohibited.

Exemptions may be obtained for hardships or special circumstances. (see below)

The Water Patrol:
Violation notices will be issued by Arvada employees that bear ?“Water Patrol?” identification badges.

Penalties for Violations:
A warning will be given for the first violation.

The second violation will carry a penalty of $100

The third a penalty of $250.

The fourth and subsequent violations will carry a penalty of $500 and the possibility of having a flow restrictor installed on the water line or the water being shut off.

Arvada?’s Goal:
Arvada must achieve a 30 percent reduction in water use this summer in order to go into next year with an acceptable storage level in our reservoirs.

Duration:
These restrictions will be in place until rescinded by the City Council.

Permits and Exemptions:
Several permits and exemptions are available for large areas 20,000 square feet or more, for new sod or seed, for special circumstance or hardship, or for well or ditch water.

Wyndham Park HOA?’s Response:
The Wyndham Park Master Association realizes that we need to take this drought seriously. At the same time, we need to come up with a watering schedule that can be implemented by our landscape contractor, Urban Farmer.

To meet the intent of the water restrictions in the most effective way, Urban Farmer has obtained a permit from the city of Arvada to allow the Master Association to water the common areas three days a week. This will dramatically reduce our water usage while at the same time keeping the grass alive and allowing Urban Farmer to operate in an effective manner.
