Garden Club Update

Jan 21, 2008

By Richard Sickert

Well, another "Tis the season to be jolly" has come and gone. The sugar plums have done their dance, the stockings have been removed from the chimneys with care and the only thing "clattering" about on the lawns are some of last year's leaves which clung stubbornly to their branches long beyond their time. Of course, let us not forget one of the last remaining vestiges of the season, the Visa bill, which is already in the mail on its way to our homes. In celebration of the season, now past,l "Les Jardini?¨res de Woodlake" once again gathered for their annual Garden Club Holiday Luncheon --- a much anticipated social and dining occasion.

This year's fete was held at Zigatos Restaurant on December 1st. The end of the year celebration was very well attended, the food ample and the entertainment was wonderful. Shelly Burns and Bill Dendle delighted the diners with renditions of various seasonal classics. Beautiful center pieces created by Lydia Reibel graced the tables.

With the passage of the calendar year, winter is officially upon us. But come early February, the almond blossoms will burst forth, providing our Sacramento region with one of the earliest, colorful signals of approaching spring. Thus, as gardeners, we realize that, for the moment, we are in that "tween" time when leaf raking is pretty much a passe event, and tilling the soil for the spring planting is not quite around the corner, but fast approaching form only a few blocks away.

If you are not already an active member of the Woodlake Garden Club, but like to get into the swing of preparing for spring, please consider joining. It's the best membership deal in town. For a very reasonable $10 per year you are able to attend the monthly meetings, gain valuable gardening knowledge from invited speakers and share the fun of gardening with your Woodlake neighbors. Additionally, this year, should you choose to do so, you can become involved in planning for the first annual Woodlake Garden Faire to be held in May at our local park.

Our next gathering will be Thursday, February 7th at the Woodlake School auditorium. Please come and join us at 7:00p.m. for this educational and social event.
