I'm sure everyone has received Kiki's letter about the clandestine activities taking place in Propspect. According to Kiki I am a clandestine organizer that is actively seeking to create social discord within our community. Just for the record, I've never organized anything in my life let alone a clandestine meeting (I'm by nature very lazy and more than a little apathetic about most things in life). However, it is true that I did write a letter to Duany. Last time I looked at the Constitution, letter writing was still a legal activity -- but apparently Kiki believes that it should not be in Prospect. For all Kiki's talk about personal freedoms (and the threat I pose to them)I'm a little perplexed that he has such a problem with free speech. In any case, I wrote this letter with the intention of creating an intellectual discussion with Mr. Duany on the role of architecture in new urban communities. Unfortunately, Kiki has decided to interpret my personal opinions to be part of a larger conspiracy against himself and other residents of Prospect. My intention is not, and has never been , to fuel the flames of social discord in our community. However, this does not mean we should not be able to have a frank, open and civil discussion about this issue. Apparently, it is easier for Kiki and Mark to paint me as a social malcontent bent on establishing a totalitarian society in Prospect than with dealing with the issues I raised on an intellectual level. While I am open to the fact that Kiki may have problems with some of my arguments, I'm discouraged by his efforts to sensationalize and distort them to serve his own interests.
Let me be the first to admit that I am not the smartest guy on the block and that my argument may be flawed -- but this is the reason I sent it to Duany in the first place! I hoped that Mr. Duany would be able to provide frank and constructive criticism of my argument and, in the process, help me better understand the relationship between architecture and sociology. Kiki, however, seems to be convinced that I am out to get him and that I get some perverse pleasure in spending my time thinking about his demise. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
I never intended on writing an open letter, however, given the fact that Kiki painted my argument in such a negative, and socially destructive, manner, I now feel compelled to make it available to anyone who wants to read it. If you want to read an excessively verbose, intellectually underdeveloped and, on the whole, rather boring argument on this issue please email me at kjaggers@compuserve.com and I'll send you a copy. If nothing else I guarentee that it will have you snoozing in 5 minutes or less.
