Renovation of Perkins Academy

As part of the Schools First project, mprovements are taking place at Perkins Academy. Contractors have been working on the roof and parapet walls and asbestos is being removed from the structure. You may have noted that the old chimney stack is gone and plans include installing a state-of-the art geothermal heat pump system. New windows will be be arriving soon. Bids have been received and contracts awarded for work which begins on April 1 within the current walls of the building.

Discussion is in progress on the potential of an addition to include space for a new music room and library for the school. Perkins Academy is one of only two elementary schools in the entire Des Moines Public Schools system which is experiencing growth in its student population, reflecting the increase in families with young children who are moving to our neighborhood.
