May 2005 - Neighborhood Crime Update

May 02, 2005

Neighborhood Crime Update: In April, the District 3 Police released their summary of reported offenses in our neighborhood for the July ?– December 2004 period, and the statistics hold some keys for prevention. ?“Burglary (30.0%) and theft from motor vehicle (29.7%) accounted for the majority of offenses. October with 70 offenses was the highest month. Monday had the highest per day average (2.12 offenses per day). 5:00 PM through the midnight hour accounted for the highest proportion of reported occurred times, and 1700 E. Louisiana had the most reports.?” We have also learned recently about a new car theft technique. According to the Police, thieves have been writing down VIN #s visible on car dashboards, obtaining duplicate keys from car dealerships, and then driving off with the car. District 3 Police recommend concealing the VIN # of your car by placing tape or another removable material over it. For this and other crime prevention tips, as well as updates on crime in our area, remember that the District 3 Police have a first Wednesday of the month meeting at 6 PM at the new station at 1625 S. University (at Iowa).
