Victorian Style Urns

The Proposal

Metro Louisville's Department of Brightside's Naturescape Grant Program was looking for proposals from non profits to help beautify the City. Not surprisingly, WSCNA stepped up with a unique idea for its historic district in a request for funds that would enable it to purchase 6 urns for permanent installation at intervals along West Saint Catherine Street. After one unsuccessful attempt in the Spring of 2006, it was awarded this grant in the Fall of 2006.

The Award & Acquisition

WSCNA was officially awarded its Naturescape Grant in the amount of $1,200.00 in the Fall of 2006 from Metro Louisville's Brightside Department. Lois Tash, Nancy McCormick, Nicole Bass & myself were in attendance at the Mayor's 2006 Neighborhood Summit to accept the "big check". During the Summit, we also recorded West Saint Catherine Street NA's very own commercial --- and, yes, of course, we were wearing our "litterati" t-shirts. Stay turned, as those commercials will air in early Spring 2007 on Metro TV, Channel 25.

Thanks to: Frank DeNiro & Randy Scott --who were instrumental in negotating a reduced purchase price for our urns, and who also provided the much needed transportation of the urns from Joe Ley's Antiques to their own home for safe and secure storage. WSCNA is grateful for their efforts, and for the financial savings! Ms. Jessica McCarty prepared the map of West Saint Catherine showing exactly where we wanted the urns placed. This map, in conjunction with photographs of the 6 locations for the urns, was used to obtain approval for installation of the urns on our street from the Landmarks Commission, as well as the Department of Public Works.

With the Landmarks' Commission Approval --the Installation

A huge thank you to our newest neighborhood friend, John Pierce, from the Second Street Neighborhood Association, who graciously and generously donated of his time to permanently install our lovely urns. Good job, John!

Finally, on April 28th, when the flowers we've ordered arrive (from the SSNA Plant Sale) , all 6 urns will be similarly planted with a mixture of dracenia, coleus, petunia wave and sweet potato vine. Enjoy the addition of these lovely Victorian styled period urns to West Saint Catherine Street's streetscape, and feel free to water and nurture the plants as needed.
