Hi all,
As some of you might already know that while working at the Alpert Jewish Community Center, I was able to get some wonderful teachers, from the Long Beach School for Adults in Long Beach, to teach great classes for the Seniors. Most of this age group are on fixed incomes, residents at the Federally Funded Housing, or are in assisted living places. Our art class was a success, and we had over 80 Seniors for the computer classes. Some of these Seniors are needing to learn new skills because even though they are retired, they are needing added income in order to survive. Also, these programs are adapted to meet their needs and capabilities. I, in fact felt so impressed by the classes that I am getting my teachers credential in order to teach Seniors, and Adults with Disabilities.

Key problem right now, is that the program is one that is doomed to be cut from the budget. Most facilities that have received teachers, can only afford the basics of care. Having worked at the Jewish Home for the Aged, for a private Convalescent Hospital, and as a consultant in charge of Activity Directors at various facilities, these classes and added programing, might be the only thing that these Adults with Disabilities and Seniors have. Also, there is evidence that with positive reinforcement, mental stimulation, and healthy activities people live longer and healthier, and imperative for the best quality of life.

For this reason, I am asking that you look at the attached sample letters, and write your own letter on behalf of the Seniors. We cannot forget this age group. In 6 years 25% of the population in Long Beach will be Seniors. A lot of us will be included.

The major talking point is to let the Senators and Assembly Members know that the Adult Education program is now at Tier3 level (will be cut) and we want it lowered to Tier 1 or Tier 2. Below, are the names and addresses for those Senators and Assembly members we need to target.

Any questions, I can be reached until this Thurs at 1pm. then on Monday the April 20th.

Senator Rod Wright - One Manchester Blvd., #600, Inglewood, CA 90301
Senator Jenny Oropeza -2512 Artesia Blvd., #200, Redondo Beach, CA, 90278-3279
Senator Alan Lowenthal - 115 Pine Ave, Suite 430, Long Beach,  CA  90802
