Charter Schools

Jun 11, 2008

fyi- for anyone interested in the state of charter schools in TX...

During the 79th Texas Legislature, Third Called Session, 2006, House Bill 1 (HB 1) was passed, which amended the Texas Education Code (TEC), Chapter 39, Public School System Accountability. The HB 1 changes addressed, in part, the accreditation of school districts in Subchapter D and sanctions and interventions for school districts, charter schools, and campuses in Subchapter G. Both of these subchapters are applicable to charter schools under TEC, Chapter 12, Charters, Subchapter D, Open-Enrollment Charter School, Section 12.104, Applicability of Title. As a result, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) plans to adopt rules to implement accreditation as it applies to charter schools.

As such, the TEA will conduct three stakeholder meetings with charter school representatives in order to solicit input on the charter school accreditation rulemaking process. We invite you to attend, or send a representative, to one or more of the following meetings:

Wednesday, June 11, 2008, ESC, Region XX, San Antonio ?– 9:00 a.m.

Tuesday, June 17, 2008, ESC, Region IV, Houston ?– 9:00 a.m.

Friday, June 20, 2008 ESC, Region XI, Fort Worth ?– 1:00 p.m.

We look forward to your participation in the upcoming stakeholder meetings. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Perry in the Division of Charter School Administration at (512) 463-9575.
