Confirmation of positive West Nile

Jul 10, 2006

The City of Fort Worth Public Health Department has received confirmation of positive West Nile mosquito pools from the Tarrant County Lab.

The West Nile virus (WNV) is a disease found in birds and transmitted by mosquitoes. In severe cases, WNV can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) in infected humans and horses.

Public health officials would like to remind residents that preventing mosquito bites is the only way to avoid human exposure. This is done by:

?· staying indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are active

?· dressing in long sleeves and pants when outside

?· wearing insect repellent containing at least 20 percent DEET when outdoors (always follow instructions when using repellent on children)

?· eliminating mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water in your yard and neighborhood.

Mosquitoes trapped at the 6400 block of Westcreek tested positive for West Nile.
