The Village Voice - Sept. & Oct. 2005

Jul 28, 2006

HELLO AGAIN!

The ?“Village Voice?” is back in business. This little publication has been out of print for several years. But good ideas have a way of bouncing back. With the help and support of all Village residents, the comeback of the Village Voice will result in a publication that is as helpful and informative as it once was to all Village residents.

UPDATED WEBSITE

The return of the Village Voice is being accompanied by a revitalization of the Village website. A website!? That?’s right! Some newer Villagers may not know it, but the Village does have a website and why not! It is only appropriate that one of the best places to live in the whole wide world should have a rightful place on the worldwide web. You will find it at:

The website has recently undergone needed updating and more is to come in the near future. Visit the website and you will find valuable information such as: rules for use of the swimming pool and clubhouse; valuable information and links regarding the Town of Collierville; names and telephone numbers of members of the Board of Directors and the various committees of the Homeowners?’ Association. And with the return of the Village Voice, the most current issue will also be posted.

Do you have any ideas for information to be placed on the website? If so, our ?“webmasters?” would like to hear from you. Contact:

THE OLD ?“CEMENT POND?”

With the ?“dog days?” of summer setting in, we can expect that the swimming pool will be attracting even more folks wishing to ?“beat the heat.?” The pool has already been enjoyed by many residents and their guests this summer. The new pool surface and the pump installed this Spring have made this attractive Village asset even more inviting. All of this adds up to it being a good time for a final reminder about the ?“pool rules.?” You will find a copy attached. If you are or plan to be a pool user, please review the rules. Pay special attention to these. Guests must be accompanied while at the pool by an ?“Adult Member?” of the Homeowner?’s Association. (An ?“Adult Member?” includes a Homeowner and his/her/their children 18 years or older.) Children in diapers are not allowed in the pool, unless they are wearing the new ?“leak-proof swimmy?” diapers. Also, if you use the poolside furniture, please make sure it is clean and orderly arranged after use. Finally, upon leaving the pool, be sure to check around for personal belongings, beverage containers, etc, you may have brought with you, and be certain that the latch on the pool gate is secure when you depart.

After Labor Day, the pool will remain open subject to weather conditions and usage.

DO YOU NEED TO DO ANY PAINTING?

A number of residents are finding that wood trim on their homes has deteriorated in certain spots that seem to be rather commonplace home-to-home; for example, corner areas where gutters angle together, on and around chimneys, and, of course, window trim, especially if it is frequently hit by water from sprinkler systems or garden hoses. Right now might be a good time for you to give your home an inspection to determine if you have any wood deterioration. If you find that you do and determine for that reason ?– or for any other reason ?– that you need to paint the outside of your home, remember that the colors in the Village are regulated. The colors are a mix prepared by Sherwin Williams and a ?“mix?” list is attached for your convenience. (Long time residents report that when other paint companies have attempted to duplicate the ?“mix?” there has been a noticeable color variation.) Again, only paint meeting the attached specifications may be used on the exterior areas designated. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the chairman of the Architectural Control Committee, Jim Joyner at 853-0472. Jim will be glad to help you make certain that you are using the right paint and color.

AND SPEAKING OF THE
ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE . . .

Please remember that outside improvements or changes are subject to the approval of the Architectural Control Committee. This includes, for purposes of example only, modifications of flowerbed borders, installation of storm doors, the cutting down of trees and shrubs, the installation of outdoor lighting, the installation of satellite dishes, etc. Once again, Jim Joyner or any of the other members of the Architectural Control Committee will be more than happy to visit with you, take a look at what you would like to do, and provide you guidance on how you can submit your plans for necessary approval. The nature of the architectural ?“look and feel?” of the Village requires an appropriate degree of uniformity in exterior appearance. Home values in the Village have continued to rise. The required adherence to the requirement of architectural committee approval has resulted in the Village keeping its charming character and has thereby contributed to that rise in property values. Continued compliance will help insure that property values will continue to increase for the benefit for all Villagers.

SOME ?“HELLOS?” AND ?“GOODBYES?”

Sam and Nancy Boatright are saying goodbye. That is certainly bad news. But the good news is they are not going very far. They are moving to a new home located in Strathmore at the corner of Poplar and Bailey Station. Sam has served on the Board of Directors for several terms as Assistant Treasurer. Nancy has been a valuable member of several committees. We thank them for their service and wish them the best in their new home.

We also regret to say goodbye to long-time residents Jim and Zita Wood who are moving but also will be staying close by in their new home in Germantown Plantation. All the best to them.

We welcome to the Village the following who have recently arrived:

Eva Eldred Austin and Suzanne Lance
1720 Village Ridge Road 1731 Village Ridge Road

John and Gwen Stamm Pamela Garrison
1716 Wainwright Court 1712 Wainwright Court

Betty Macyauski And we say ?“welcome back?” to Ann
1741 Constable Court (Sproles) Haley at 1753 Constable Court.

If we have left anyone out of the departure or arrival lists, we apologize in advance. Please notify us of the oversight and we will include the news in the next edition.

AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL . . .

Many Villagers have joined their neighbors in recent months to enjoy fun events planned and hosted by the Welcoming and Hospitality Committee. In April, a wonderful ?“Breakfast at the Clubhouse?” event was held. Villagers enjoyed all the scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, etc. they could eat. In June, a fun-filled ?“Fiesta?” was held in the clubhouse, complete with great ?“south-of-the-border?” dishes and a mariachi band made up of two local entertainers.

In early July, the Welcoming and Hospitality Committee staged ?“Dessert Night?” at the clubhouse, and what an event it was! Everything that could satisfy a ?“sweet tooth?” was available to enjoy. On August 2nd, the ?“National Neighborhood Watch Ice Cream Social?” was held. Homemade ice cream and sundaes were enjoyed by attendees. Martha Gardiner, our ?“Neighborhood Watch Coordinator?”, explained how the Village was joining neighborhoods all over the country in having the event. The event allows residents to show their willingness to ?“watch out?” for their neighbors and their property and thereby help local law enforcement authorities. Martha also introduced some of the Village residents who will be serving as ?“Block Captains.?” A complete list of ?“Block Captains?” will be published in the next edition of the Village Voice.

The next event to be hosted by the Welcoming and Hospitality Committee will be a reprise of ?“The Great Village Chili Cook-off.?” It is scheduled for October. The committee will be providing more information about this event in the near future. But, in the meantime, all you ?“big, bad chili cooks?” out there might want to start thinking about how you are going to ?“spice up?” this year?’s recipe.

The members of the Welcoming and Hospitality Committee are as follows: Angie Yeiser, Linda Stewart, Michelle Smith, Gail Joyner, Martha Gardiner, Laurie Escarre, Marsha Tucker, Ronelle Derby, Terri Popp, and Nancy Boatright. They are doing a great job and their creativity and hard work is really appreciated.

FINALLY . . . THANKS!

Thank you for taking the time to read this first renewal edition of the Village Voice. Our publication schedule will be this August/September edition, followed by editions for October/November, December/January, February/March, April/May, and June/July. Special editions may also be issued on an ?“as-needed?” basis.

Many Villagers have already given valuable assistance in the form of ideas and encouragement for this publication. And, indeed, it is to one such resident that this first edition is dedicated - Ms. Louise Hayes. Louise has lived in the Village for several years. Those who know her know that Louise exudes ?“southern?” charm and that in her career as a chief buyer with Goldsmith?’s department store Louise was able to carry that charm to the fashion capitals of the world. (A great article about Louise and her interesting career appeared several months ago in The Commercial Appeal.) In keeping with her genteel manner, Louise has gently prodded for the resurrection of this little publication and offered valuable ideas for it. No doubt she will continue to do so in the future, and she would be the first to encourage everyone with constructive suggestions to submit them.

Thanks to Louise for her help and encouragement, and thanks in advance to the Villagers who we know will come forward with their ideas on how we can make this publication informative, and maybe even a little bit entertaining.

Send your ideas and suggestions to Ted Yeiser at (901) 853-7233, by mail to 1722 Higginson Square, Collierville, Tennessee 38017, or via e-mail to taayeiser@aol.com.
