Once again we find ourselves in the heat of summer in Southern California, time for a few quick facts. The average yearly rainfall in downtown Los Angeles is only about 14 inches, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP), a mere 14% of our water supply comes from groundwater from local wells, the other 86% comes from the eastern Sierra Nevada and the Colorado River. These facts should remind us that our water supply is precious and costly. A few things to keep in mind are that the DWP prohibits using water on hard surfaces such as sidewalks, walkways, driveways or parking areas. So instead of using a hose, pick up a broom or rake. DWP also prohibits watering lawns between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., April 1 to Sept. 30 and between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., Oct. 1 to March 31. These rules are in place in order to cut back on what is considered wasteful water use.
