Crime Prevention through Environmental Design

District 3 Substation 1625 South University

This is a 16-hour class designed for any law enforcement professional or citizen that would like to learn more about opportunistic criminal behavior and how environmental factors can encourage or deter such behavior. This class is particularly useful for patrol officers, investigators, and community resource officers. Participants will learn how they can immediately begin applying CPTED principles as part of their community policing efforts.

Program Topics Include:
• The role of CPTED with other crime prevention efforts.
• The basic principles of CPTED, including natural surveillance, access control, territorial reinforcement, and maintenance.
• How to document and present your findings to a variety of audiences.
• Strategies for applying CPTED principles in a variety of settings, including residential and commercial areas.
• Identifying resources to partner with, such as city planners and traffic engineers.

This training includes “hands-on” experience evaluating properties. At the completion of the training, participants should be able to perform a CPTED analysis on a variety of property types in their community.
