University Community Association

Letter from the President

Nov 01, 2001

The University District has always been a very open and tolerant community. We have people of every nationality and color living in our neighborhoods. We pride ourselves on our diversity and ability to live together in harmony. Those who choose the University District as home accept a living environment that is eclectic, sometimes challenging, always stimulating.
The University Community Association is a membership organization representing residents of the University District. Our purpose is to promote the community as a good place to live and work. That is why the vandalism of the Taj Mahal restaurant was such a surprise and disappointment. As a long time neighborhood business, the Taj Mahal has been a landmark on High Street for many years.
We cannot let recent events change the way we look at our neighbors, alter the businesses we frequent or keep us from speaking out when injustice is being done.
Those who intimidate, threaten or harm people or property because of the owner?’s color or ethnic origin are no better than the terrorists. As a community we must work together to create a society where reason and law protect all our citizens.
