Actually, it is not illegal to "tell someone they cannot rent thier [sic] own property." A homeowners association may enact such a covenant and legally enforce it. There is abundant caselaw in all 50 states supporting it.
I own a home that is rented in Hickory Hills and I have great renters, never a complaint and I check on my home often. I rented because I could not sell it last year without dropping the price to a ridiculous low price that would also lower everyone's property values as well. And I could have done that because I bought the house when the property was low. And values jumped greatly after I purchased mine. I CHOSE not to do that because I didn't want to hurt my neighbors!! Maybe you guys should find another way to handle the renters living next to you. Like contacting the police if there's a problem. I know some of the homeowners who keep their homes worse than my renters
