Ducks vs. Antifreeze

Posted in: Towne Lake Garden

I live in the culdesac on Lake Sunset Ct; my neighbors across the street noticed some ducks acting weird sitting in a puddle.  We initially thought they were injured, but couldn't find any marks.  I called the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation and they told me they would look for volunteers to come pick them up.  As the evening went on we lost 4 ducks and when the volunteers got there around 10; they picked up 8 still alive; most of them just barely.  I really hope this was an act of ignorance vs. laziness or even worse maliciousness, but below is how to properly clean up anitfreeze spills.

  1. 1

Make sure no pets get near the area until the spill has been fully cleaned.

  2. 2

Pour kitty litter, sand or other absorbent material on the spill immediately.

  3. 3

Allow the material to absorb as much of the antifreeze as possible. Pick up and discard the absorbent material using paper towels.

  4. 4

Clean the area vigorously using soap and warm water.

  5.

  7. Immediately secure the used paper towels and absorbent material where it won't be disturbed by animals until it can be picked up with the rest of your trash.

For future problems with any sick or injured animals; the WRR number is (830) 336-2725.  It's a 24 hour hotline.

Making a donation to become a member is a great way to support Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation's life-saving efforts. WRR receives no federal, state, or local tax dollars. Your generosity is the reason thousands of animals every year get a fighting chance.

Just to add, the volunteers were the ones who identified that it was antifreeze in the puddle that the ducks were sitting in.

Update:  All 8 ducks that the WRR picked up died; so that is 12 ducks total.
