History

Location

We are bound by Timrod Park Avenue (South), Palmetto Street (North), Irby Street (East) and Park Avenue (West).  

Residents

Timrod Park Neighborhood is a mixture of life-long residents and relative newcomers.  Many were first drawn to the fine old homes.  Who could resist the romance of homes with stained glass and leaded glass windows, fireplaces, hardwood floors and cabinetry, sleeping porches and welcoming front porches?  

Architecture

The neighborhood contains a noteworthy collection of historic architecture including Craftsman Bungalow, Tudor Revival, Cottage, Mediterranean Revival, Colonial Revival, American Foursquare and Dutch Colonial Revival; however historic Craftsman bungalows constitute over 50 percent of the homes. Most of our historic homes have front porches, hardwood floors, fireplaces, and large windows with lots of natural light.  

Craftsman Bungalow: The Craftsman Bungalow is a home design that became popular at the end of Victorian era and reflected the desire to depart from the excesses of that age.  The Craftsman Bungalow is an open floor plan with wide overhanging eaves.  Some common characteristics include walls which taper inward from the foundation, ornate decorative beam extensions and flared eaves.  

Cottage:  Originating in the countryside of England, cottage style is casually comfortable and practical.  the unassuming charm of whitewash, lattice and wicker are indoor favorites.  The cottage garden is always an integral part of these homes.  

Neighborhood Assets

Due to it's historic significance and close proximity to downtown, Timrod Park neighborhood became part of the Florence Downtown Redevelopment District.  

Traditional Historic Neighborhood:  The city has begun to see the Timrod Park neighborhood as an example of how to successfully restore a friendly neighborhood atmosphere.  We encourage the removal of aluminum and vinyl siding, opening front porches to greet neighbors, and removing carpeting to reveal the beauty of orginal hardwood floors.  

Neighborhood Amenities:  We are also within walking distance of many amenities including an 18 acre park, grocery store, coffee and doughnut shop, Florence Art Museum, Florence Montessori School and many others. 

Monthly Meetings

Our neighborhood association meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 7 PM at the Billy Jeffers Center in Timrod Park.
