Timber Creek

CRITICAL SCHOOL BOUNDARY MTG, OCT 12, anytime 7-9pm

PLS DROP IN AND COMPLETE A SURVEY supporting new school

THIS WILL TAKE NO MORE THAN 15 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME!

This survey really counts. The Board is looking for feedback from all residents in Fort Collins regarding their willingness to support a new school in the SE end of town (and in Wellington) versus changing boundaries (and busing children all over town).

Zach is FULL and our neighborhood has been previously identified as one of the first candidates for busing (in some scenarios as far as Drake and College).

Residents from older parts of Fort Collins where enrollment is low are likely to oppose a new school because this may increase the chances of closing older schools in their neighborhoods. While we would like to separate the two issues (of building new schools and closing old ones), there may not be enough operating funds to run both new and old schools.

IF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD DOES NOT SHOW IN HIGH NUMBERS (ALL ADULTS IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD), WE WILL LIKELY BE OUT-VOTED BY OPPONENTS OF A NEW SCHOOL, AND OUR CHILDREN WILL BE BUSED TO ONE OF THE OLDER SCHOOLS WITH UNDERENROLLMENT.

ALTERNATIVE MEETING TIMES - TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY

If you cannot make the Oct 12th meeting, you can complete a survey at any of the other scheduled meetings (pls remember, this is a drop in Open House format - no more than 15 minutes of your time required):

MORE DETAILED INFORMATION:

For more than a year, Poudre School District and stakeholder groups have been studying enrollment & boundary challenges. Three factors – growth in some areas, decline in others, and a growing percentage of families exercising School Choice – are creating significant, uneven distribution of students across schools. The focus right now is on elementary schools. After much study & discussion, the Student Enrollment Steering Committee (representing schools, district administration, parents, & the community) presented the preliminary options listed below to the Board of Education on Sept. 19th. The Steering Committee will analyze the feedback from the Public Input Meetings and then hold an additional work session with the Board on Nov. 21st. A recommendation will be made to the Board in Jan. 2006.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ATTEND, ASK QUESTIONS, AND COMPLETE A FEEDBACK & SURVEY FORM

Scenarios found to be viable by the Steering Committee
Cottonwood:
Build 2 new elementary schools (SE Fort Collins & Wellington), Close 1 school (Moore Elem), relocate 150 Bacon students, move Lab School & close Washington Elem facility. Note: Funds are presently available to build 2 new schools.
Redwood:
Same as Cottonwood scenario, except the construction of the 2nd school would be contingent on a successful Mill Levy Election to fund school operations. Does not specify whether the 1st school built would be in SE Fort Collins or Wellington.
Aspen:
Build 2 new elementary schools (SE Fort Collins & Wellington), Close no schools, relocate 150 Bacon students, move Lab School & close Washington Elem facility. Fund new school operating budgets with a Mill Levy Election focusing on small schools.

Scenarios found to be infeasible by the Steering Committee but forwarded for public review
Pine:
Do not build or close schools. Implement widespread District boundary changes to distribute enrollment. Approx. 1200 students would be moved.
Spruce:
Build a new school in Wellington, Close 1 school (Moore Elem), move Lab School. Move Traut to Riffenburgh Elem, move Riffenburgh students to other schools, move SE Fort Collins neighborhood students into current Traut building.

IF YOU CANNOT MAKE THE WED MEETING, YOU CAN ATTEND ONE OF SEVERAL OTHERS. Meetings are being held at various locations & dates this next month. The same information will be provided at each meeting.
