Taft Canyon Neighborhood

Mosquito Alert

May 31, 2005

Colorado Mosquito Control has advised a resident that they found larvae from the type of mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus in some of the wet areas down in the lower open spaces of Taft Canyon. CMC is contracted by the city/county to identify potential mosquito breeding areas and distribute larvicide to control the mosquito population. Last year they visited Taft Canyon weekly during the breeding season and they are continuing to do so this year as well.

Knowing that 'West Nile mosquitos' may be around, please take appropriate precautions. These include using inspect repellent with DEET and staying inside (or wearing long sleeves and long pants) during dawn/dusk hours when mosquitoes are most active. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommend insect repellents containing oil of lemon eucalyptus and picaridin.

It's also recommended to get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying any containers of standing water including flower pots, buckets, barrels, wading pools, bird baths and pet dishes.

The Pond/Wetlands Committee is starting meetings to address the breeding sites in the lower tracts, call Kristi Gilsdorf at 204-6260 for info.

So much for those after dinner walks!
