After attending last nights meeting and hearing discussion of what needed to be done at the Community Center for the kids, I was left with the impression that the center was adult oriented. Being a (somewhat) responsible adult, I drove over this morning to check it out. What I found IS geared towards kids though I am not sure about some of the activities. Two pool tables- pool shark training? A TV room- Hey lets encourage them to fill their mind with mindless drivel- How about a reading room? I was told by the janitor on duty that they are putting in a computer room- internet porn for teens? What I would like most to see there- for kids and adults- is for one of the rooms to be converted to a small exercise room. Granted the gym allows for basketball in the winter but what about those of us that are vertically challenged? How about putting in some free weights and cardio workout equipment? How many of us have unused bikes, treadmills, etc gathering dust (or in my case dirty laundry) in our basements. I would bet that if we put an ad in the paper and a request in the newsletter, we could get equipment donated. I think we would much better serve the youth (and adult) population by encouraging a healthy body than by promoting even more ''couch potato'' behavior with computers and Cable.
Thanks
why so negative?

Having pool tables doesn't mean that the people using them are doing anything more than passing the time with friends. At least they are learning good eye-hand coordination. And when does a computer room at a community center equal internet porn? Besides the fact that content can be filtered some kids may want to check their email or look up a web site someone told them about. I think the point is that they have an alternative place to socialize. An athletic facility or room would be great but you still have to motivate people to do those things. Don't knock the people for watching the tv and/or using the internet - they may not have other opportunities to sit down and chill and react to the things they see with friends.

Community Center

It seems as if someone agrees with you based on the Survey in the Newsletter.
I fully agree with your comments. This would be an excellent resource for families in the community for cross generational activities. Some of us older adults would enjoy some arts and crafts, book clubs, etc. that other community centers enjoy. Perhaps these activities are there but their availability is not communicated effectively. With more adult presence, perhaps the youth of our neighborhood would utilize it more. This would be a great community upgrade project for everyone!
