Traffic Calming Committee

Posted in: Sylvan Park
Your SPNA Traffic Calming Committee has been busy at work to find ways to eliminate dangerous intersections, speeding, and other serious traffic problems. If you should have any ideas you wish to pass on to us, please do so on this page. We will take everything into consideration.
When we have a proposal, we will present it at a SPNA Meeting. Thanks.

nevada at 48th

Dear Traffic Calming Committee:
My wife runs regularly, 5 or 6 days a week, in the neighborhood, and she believes that Nevada at 48th St. is one of the most dangerous, unmarked intersections here. There are two problems: the fundamental one that people speed too much on east-west streets, coupled to a hill at that site that blocks the view.

51st and Elkins

I live on 51st near the intersection of Elkins. Speeding is a HUGE problem on 51st because there is only one stop sign and it is a relatively straight shot to Charlotte. There are numerous accidents, and countless near misses. My mailbox has been the victim of one accident; however my neighbor (George Hamilton) has had several wrecks in his yard. I'm scared to back out of the driveway, and my other neighbor backs into her driveway so she doesn't have to. I know George has been working diligently with various city committees to get something done, and recently a guardrail was erected in his yard. I'd like to see some additional speed control to keep our human and pet neighbors safe.

Citizen Radar Guns

There was something on the Today morning show this morning (the one with Diane Sawyer, I'm really not sure of the name) that depicted a new cheap radar gun that citizen's groups are using in cooperation with their local police department to slow traffic in their neighborhoods. They get a reading on speeding vehicles, submit the license number to the police and generate a "letter from your neighbors" to the miscreant. Seems to be pretty effective.

Also want to make sure you're keeping aware of the Neighborhood Alliance's efforts on this subject. Might check with Cam Thompson for more info.
