The new year gives us another chance to check

Happy New Year, it’s a good time to pause and think about how to make the new year a safe one for your family. Winter weather and seasonal activities can increase the risk of home fires during this time of year.

Home heating equipment, holiday cooking, and New Year’s celebrations all contribute to a rise in fire-related incidents. Many of these fires can be prevented by taking simple, common-sense precautions.

By staying aware and prepared, we can help ensure 2026 starts off safe, warm, and enjoyable.

Want to help stop Medicare fraud? Here are some tips

Medicare fraud, abuse, and billing errors cost taxpayers billions of dollars each year and can directly impact the care beneficiaries receive. These issues occur when services are billed incorrectly, unnecessarily, or fraudulently, putting both public funds and personal health at risk.

North Carolina’s Senior Medicare Patrol, located within the Department of Insurance, helps educate and empower seniors to recognize potential fraud, ask the right questions, and report concerns. Understanding how to protect yourself is an important step in safeguarding your healthcare and your Medicare benefits.

Commissioner Causey warns of phone scam targeting families of jailed inmates

Phone scams increase during the holiday season every year. ?Ÿ“±?Ÿš¨

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is warning North Carolinians about a dangerous phone scam targeting families of jailed inmates. Scammers pose as licensed bail bondsmen or sheriff’s deputies and pressure victims to send money through apps like Chime, Apple Pay, or Venmo, promising early release.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up and verify the information with the NCDOI Criminal Investigations Division. Special Agents are currently investigating 24 cases across the state.

I sent a letter to President Trump regarding Greg Lindberg

Just before Christmas, I sent an important letter to President Trump urging him not to pardon convicted insurance executive Greg Lindberg. His criminal actions caused serious harm to North Carolina policyholders and undermined the state’s insurance regulatory system.

These were not victimless crimes. The financial damage to insurance companies and the resulting impact on policyholders were real, lasting, and continue to affect families who relied on these policies for their financial security. Protecting the integrity of our regulatory system and maintaining public trust in the rule of law remain critically important.

Automobile theft costs us all, puts upward pressure on insurance premiums

Auto theft is more than an inconvenience for vehicle owners—it also contributes to higher insurance costs for everyone. While comprehensive auto insurance typically covers theft, the loss of a vehicle can create significant disruptions and financial strain.

With vehicle thefts on the rise nationwide and in North Carolina, understanding the factors behind these crimes and taking simple preventive steps can help protect your car and help keep insurance premiums in check.
