Re: School Nurse

Thank you for contacting my office to express your concern with Governor Swift's recent action in cutting the school health services line items in the State fiscal year 2002 budget. I am happy to report that today the conference committee released the final appropriations for the fiscal year 2002 budget.

The conference committee agreed to reinstate the full funding for school nurses. The funding, however, is no longer found in line item 4590-0451. Rather, the conference committee included this funding in the Department of Public Health's Tobacco Control budget, line item 4590-0450.

Please know that I understand the importance of school nurses in schools and advocated my support for full funding. Although almost every line item was cut in the state budget, the Senate worked hard to ensure full funding of this important line item in order to protect our children in school.
