Speed Bumps

Posted in: McIntyre Matters

Speed bumps were briefly discussed at the annual meeting last night (October 28) and I would like to state that I'm opposed to them.  Perhaps they were voted on in the past and I wasn't present, but I'd still like to voice my opinion.

I live on a long straight stretch of Bayview Parkway (an ideal place to speed) and I don't believe speeding is a problem.  I'll admit, when you're standing on the side of the road and someone drives by at 25 mph (the posted speed limit) it seems like they're going 40-45 mph.  I know because my wife and I did an experiment a few months ago, where she drove by at 25 mph while I watched from the sidewalk.

A car traveling 25 mph would also appear to be speeding to those people who choose to walk in the street instead of on the sidewalk.

But please, before we move forward with speed bumps, let's be sure speeding is really a problem.  To anyone who claims it is, please provide some data to back up your claim (e.g., number of speeding tickets written over a six to 12 month period).  Opinions and feelings that speeding is a problem do not qualify as data and are not sufficient reasons to add speed bumps.

Michelle Corless stated last night that speed bumps are still at least a few years away, and I'm very happy about that.

I certainly agree. I can't count the number of times I have been driving towards my home and someone out getting their mail will motion with their hands for me to slow down. I look at the speedo and sure enough, I'm going under the speed limit. Speeding is not an "issue" as far as I have seen. There are lots of things that are a problem, such as crime, but I haven't noticed speeding as one of them.

Lets get the kids out of the street and not worry about it. I shouldn't have to slow down and honk to get the kids loitering in the street to move out of the way of my car.
