Door-to-Door Request for Handout

Posted in: Southern Dunes

I am wondering if any other residents/tenants in Southern Dunes had a young man come to their front door requesting handout/donation recently.  This afternoon, a young man rang my neighbor's doorbell.  Apparently, when she answered, he started telling her about his life story in an effort to get money from her.  I was outside playing with my boys at the time, so after I saw the young man leave her house, I asked her if he was selling something, because I wanted to warn my wife not to answer our door (sorry, if this offends anyone). She told me what had happened, and also said that she didn't give him any money.  Interestingly enough, the young man didn't come to my door.  My neighbor and I walked around to the front of our houses to see if the young man was going door-to-door on our street.  However, he was no where in sight.  I am a little concerned that the young man is targeting the homes of women since he didn't come to my door, and I was outside in my backyard playing with my boys.  (My wife was in the house, so it's not like we missed hearing the doorbell or anything like that.)  Again, just wondering if any other neighbors had this same person come to their door or if anyone knows this young man.  If he's a neighbor that's really in need, maybe we can help him locate a local church that can assist him or some other resource for him.

Not sure if I know what you are referring to.  A few weeks back a man approached my neighbor's door with a bottle of window cleaner and some rags.  He seemed pretty adamant about washing their windows.  He never did come to my house.

Thank you for responding.  It was May 23rd at ~4:30pm, the young man went to my neighbor's door, as soon as she answered, he started telling her his hard luck story and why he needed money, and also showed her a picture of his child, etc.  There was no car in her driveway or in front of her house, so the man apparently walked to her house (which is why I was wondering if he lives in the neighborhood).  My wife, kids and I were also home (we live next door to her), and the young man didn't come to our house, nor did he approach her neighbors on the other side.  I saw the young man going to her front door, since I was outside in the backyard playing with my kids (my wife was in the house fixing dinner, so she definitely would have heard our doorbell if it rang...especially since, this man kept ringing the neighbor's doorbell until she answered the door).  After my neighbor told me what had happened, I thought it was curious as to why the young man only went to her house, when we were clearly home as well.  I'm not too good at this posting stuff, but thought perhaps the intent of this forum was to keep neighbors informed of anything going on in the neighborhood, especially potential safety issues. However, it doesn't seem like most people in Southern Dunes read or participate here, so maybe this isn't the best place to mention it?  Again, I appreciate your taking time to respond.  Also very interesting about the window washing incident...kind of wonder if this is the same young man, but he is just using a different story.  Both incidents sound kind of weird to me.

I post on this forum from time to time.  However it's not widely used by the 100's of residents of SD.  I do know that if someone comes to my door even if it's a Jehova's Witness I always tell them that no soliciting is allowed.  The only sign I am aware of thought is at the southern entrance on Tibbs near the golf course.
