P.O.W.E.R. (Pursuing Opportunites Through Wellness, Enlightenment & Respect) is a nondenominational-based rites of passage program utilizing the Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba) of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is a way of life. The principles are designed to strengthen our collective self-concept, honor our past, critically evaluate our present and commit ourselves to a fuller, more productive future.

P.O.W.E.R. is designed to foster a positive sense of self, family and community in youth ages 8-12 through:

P.O.W.E.R. activities include:

Tutoring
Writing
Arts & Crafts
Basketball
Cooking Classes
DEFY Youth Camp
Field Trips
Guest Speakers
Team Building Exercises
Community Volunteer Projects

Some activities are ongoing throughout the program; others will be conducted on a monthly basis.


VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!

Mentors:
Build and maintain a relationship with youth.
Assist with school assignments/ problem areas during Academic Enhancement Sessions.
Conduct P.O.W.E.R. meetings with parents of youth.
Act as chaperones during scheduled field trips.

Facilitators:
Present scheduled topic material.
Act as group mentor.

Peer Leaders:
Act as role models for youth.
Assist mentors and facilitators.

P.O.W.E.R. is currently being conducted at the Presbyterian Community Center. The program will run Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5 pm till 8 pm. If you have questions about the P.O.W.E.R. Program you can contact:
