As students head back to school, let’s protect their future

School is back in session, and students are returning to North Carolina classrooms.

Keeping our kids safe as they travel to and from school, whether by bus, car, bicycle or foot, is of utmost importance.

More than 14,000 school buses carrying about 800,000 students will operate on the state’s highways every day. Fortunately, most school bus trips across our state and our nation are uneventful. However, sometimes school bus trips end in tragedy.

For 40 years, Alberta Pettaway has been a trusted source of guidance, compassion and support for Medicare beneficiaries in Edgecombe County.

Her journey with the Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) began in 1986, when the program was launched at the E. L. Roberson Center in Tarboro. Working as the center's receptionist at the time, Alberta became one of SHIIP's very first trained volunteer counselors.

For the past four decades, she has helped countless North Carolinians understand their Medicare coverage, compare plan options and make informed health insurance decisions.
