Santa Monica Canyon Civic Association

Santa Monica Canyon Neighborhood Traffic Study

Final Statement of Goals for Study

GENERAL GOALS:
1. Increase safety throughout the canyon for: pedestrians, disabled, children, pets, residents and nonresidents in cars, valets,
2. Increase ease of access to and from homes for residents,
3. Restrict usage of Canyon streets by nonresidents,
4. Make Canyon streets less attractive for short cuts by nonresidents,
5. Decrease traffic speed,
6. Preserve historic character of the Canyon*,
7. Encourage bicyclists, walkers, and other noncar users as they help make the Canyon socially and visually interesting*,
8. Minimize the negative aspects of commercial uses and restaurants open after 10:00 p.m.,
9. Reduce nighttime noise, and
10. Reduce commercial truck traffic.
11. Improve signage to increase traffic safety for visitors.
*Also put in Local Coastal Plan.
SPECIFIC GOALS:
1. Amalfi:
o Amalfi Court. Allow permit parking only in Amalfi Court to decrease Canyon School traffic jams and accidents in the small cul de sac.
o Install speed humps on lower Amalfi Drive
2. East, West Rustic and Sycamore Road residents their primary traffic concern is speeding including on the part of summer outside users attempting to park in this lower canyon area.
3. Entrada:
o Install a stop sign or pedestrian operated traffic light at the dangerous corner of Entrada and Amalfi.
o Install a stop sign at Amalfi, a crosswalk and perhaps traffic calming islands.
o Restore the island that was removed in front of the school.

o Replace Yield sign with stop sign at the dogleg turn from Entrada onto Ocean Ave. Extension (about half a block before the light and crosswalk). It is very dangerous. Cars come tearing around that corner and can't see pedestrians in the crosswalk.
o The light at Ocean Ave. Extension / East Channel is always green for Entrada traffic and activated for cross traffic, switch this the other way, always red for Entrada unless activated.
o Coordinate timing of the Santa Monica light on 7th and San Vicente with the Entrada lights to allow breaks in the traffic flow.
o Increasing area of permitted parking from Ocean/East Channel to the Eastern City Limit to slow traffic
o Add edge lines to slow traffic
o Increase safety of bus passengers crossing Entrada.
o Reinstall painted crosswalk at the intersection of Stassi Lane and Entrada. The old crosswalk was removed several years ago; the announced reason was that it made crossing too dangerous.
o Install Pedestrian initiated signal crosswalk at Entrada and Amalfi, like smart crosswalks on Pico in Santa Monica, or a 3-way stop sign at corner.
o Repair and widen sidewalk from Ocean Avenue Extension and Entrada to San Vicente and Entrada.
o Prohibit left turns out of Chevron Station onto Entrada; Creates dangerous conditions for right turning vehicles from PCH and blocks traffic on Entrada at signal with PCH
4. Mesa Road
o Provide safer parking options.
o Reduce speed.
o Insure the safety of pedestrians walking alone or pushing/pulling strollers or carts.
o Minimize cut through traffic.
5. Rustic Canyon:
o Install traffic calming measures to reduce speeding, especially around "blind" curves.
6. General:
o Facilitate pedestrian friendly atmosphere by installing pedestrian crossings to connect existing stairways and walkways.
o Keep cars toward the center of the road so that trashcans are not hit and allow a buffer from the pathways.
o Increase ease of crossing the street at all intersections, particularly 3-way or T intersections.
o Make Canyon streets less attractive for short cuts by nonresidents,
o Install traffic calming islands such as in the Hayden tract in Culver City.
o My most urgent specific concern regarding traffic in our community is traffic calming.
o Reduce late night bus hours / noise, particularly on Sundays
o Consider one-way streets
