FOOD STAMP ACTION IS NEEDED!

Mar 14, 2002

The House and Senate conference committee is now working to develop a
final farm bill that will include changes to the Food Stamp program.
Action is needed to convince the conferees to adopt a final bill that
includes the stronger Food Stamp provisions that were in the Senate
version of the farm bill (S.1731). The Senate version would add $8.9
billion to Food Stamps over the next ten years to better help low
income
families apply for and receive adequate levels of Food Stamps. The
Senate version also would restore Food Stamps to otherwise eligible
legal immigrants, including all legal immigrant children poor enough to
qualify. The Senate Food Stamp provisions greatly improve upon those
in
the House farm bill (H.R. 2646) and are similar to the Food Stamp
improvements in the Act to Leave No Child Behind.

The conference committee will make decisions soon that will have a
tremendous impact on the ability of low income families to get the Food
Stamp assistance that they need. Please contact your Senators and
Representative to urge farm bill conference chairs, Senator Harkin
(D-IA) and Representative Combest (R-TX), to include the Senate's
stronger Food Stamp provisions in the final farm bill.
