This fall marks the beginning of the third full school year since passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, and already the benefits to America?’s school children are evident. As U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige has said, ?“ We know that No Child Left Behind is starting to generate some amazing results, transforming the educational landscape.?”

Nowhere are the improvements more significant than in reading, where, test data show, students are making important gains. The National Center for Education Statistics recently reported that:

?· Scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reading tests were well above the levels recorded in 1998 and 2000.

?· African American, Hispanic and low-income students account for some of the most significant improvements in NAEP scores.

?· Students in the largest urban public school systems showed significant

improvement in reading and math in the first year under No Child Left Behind.

This good news will be the focus of September?’s edition of Education News Parents Can Use as the program explores why the first and most important goal of education in America should be to ensure that every child develops proficiency in reading. The live discussion and videotaped reports will examine ways schools and families can help students develop the skills, knowledge and habits they need to master

literacy skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. We will highlight the critical role of highly qualified teachers in improving reading achievement and in closing the achievement gaps.

The one-hour program will explore questions such as:

?· How do children develop the reading skills necessary to ensure them a solid foundation for success throughout school and life?

?· What does the latest research tell us about the best ways for children to learn reading skills?
?· What role do teachers play in ensuring that America?’s students become successful readers?
?· How is No Child Left Behind helping more children learn to read proficiently?
?· What can parents do to ensure that their children become good readers?
