Head Start Legislation to be Introduced 5/21/03

May 20, 2003

On Wednesday, May 21st the Education and Workforce Committee, House of
Representatives, will introduce Head Start legislation.

This legislation will contain language to develop - at some level - a
state option/block grant. It is critical Head Start advocates continue
to promote the understanding that Head Start Works!

The introduction of the legislation should generate press on Thursday
and Friday of this week.

NOW is the time to prep letters to the editor - Plan a Saturday letter
writing party with parents & friends of Head Start. Visit
www.saveheadstart.org Review the CHSA Advocacy Tool Box. and stay tuned - it is
critical we focus on this legislation now before it moves out of the
Workforce and Education Committee.

The Administration, Education and Workforce Committee, advocates and
Congressional leadership - Republicans and Democrats have shared that
Head Start has many success - but can be improved. One issue all parties
are very interested in is COORDINATION OF SERVICES and PROGRAM
COLLABORATION.

Be sure to express in your letter to Congress and to the newspapers how
important Head Start is in your local community, able to leverage
funding sources, deliver a variety of services to families and involved in
communities.

Friends of Head Start can ensure we remain a federal to local program,
administered by the department of Health and Human Services -
