The Depth Of California Asset Poverty

Jan 08, 2003

The California Budget Project Invites You To A Public Policy Briefing
OnA New Study Revealing The Depth Of California Asset Poverty

More Californians are asset poor than income poor. While income
povertyis important, the role assets play in poverty alleviation and
self-sufficiency has long been neglected. Owning assets builds
strongcommunities and gives families the resources needed to create a future for
themselves and their children. The Corporation for Enterprise Development,
a national nonprofit economic development policy group, has released a
new report card comparing state policies and performance with respect
to how assets are accumulated, distributed, and protected among their
citizens, particularly among those often left out of the economic
mainstream. Learn about:

* How California's asset policies compare to those of other
states;
* What policymakers can do to encourage asset development; and
* Model programs and policies that can help low-income families
build assets.
