Characteristics of Food Stamp Households: Fiscal Year 2001

More than half of all food stamp participants are children, and over three-quarters of all food stamps go to households with kids. Thirty-nine percent of beneficiaries are non-elderly adults; and roughly 10 percent are elderly. Nearly 90 percent of families who use food stamps live below the poverty line -- about 27 percent of food stamp recipients work and earn wages.
