Child advocates say that the August recess is the perfect time to let your elected officials know your values and priorities. Ask questions at public appearances, write a letter to the editor of your local paper, or let the staff in the local office know what you will be watching for in September.
When Congress returns from its August recess, it will still have to pass the major appropriations bills that fund juvenile justice, education and job training, child welfare and child care. This was a very tight year for spending, so advocates' voices will be especially important.
The Senate Appropriations Committee passed the FY 2003 Labor-Health and
Human Services-Education spending bill last week. The next step is for the bill to go to the Senate floor for a vote. http://appropriations.senate.gov/releases/record.cfm?id=184990
