The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee is scheduled to take up reauthorization of the Child Care and Development Block Grant on July 17. This month, the Senate Appropriations Committee reviews its FY 2003 appropriations bill, which contains funds for important child and family programs in the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education. At stake are funds for the Promoting Safe and Stable Families Program (to prevent child abuse and neglect), initiatives to offer youth aging out of foster care post-secondary education and training vouchers, increased funding for Head Start, and increased funding for the child care block grant and after-school programs at the 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
