Funding for Girls in sports

Dec 14, 2001

The Women's Sports Foundation, which awards grants and
scholarships to promote the involvement of women and girls
in sports, has announced the availability of funding for
girls sports programs through the following two programs:

Sponsored by Secret, a Procter & Gamble brand, the "Secret
Sportsgirl of the Year" program invites the nomination of
young women who excel in amateur sports, inspire other
teens, and exhibit characteristics of healthy self-esteem.
Coaches, teachers, athletic directors, parents, and peers
are encouraged to nominate teen girls who participate in
school-sponsored or open amateur sports. One girl will be
selected from each of the fifty United States, and Secret
and the Women's Sports Foundation will then select four
finalists and one Sportsgirl of the Year. The top winner's
school or team will be awarded $5,000; the four additional
finalists?’ schools/teams will each win $1,000, and the
remaining forty-five state finalists?’ schools/team will
receive $250. The nominee must be a female, 11-18 years of
age at time of nomination, who participates in an
athletic/sports endeavor. Nomination forms may be obtained
by visiting the program's Web site:

The GoGirlGo project is dedicated to the development and
funding of girls' sports programs that combine athletic
skill instruction and programming with the delivery of
educational information aimed at reducing risk behaviors
that threaten the health and social advancement of girls
aged 10-14 years. The program, which provides educational
curriculum and materials, is offering grants to support
the girls?’ sports programming efforts of organizations,
agencies, and schools that agree to participate in the
project. Individual grants of up to $25,000 will be
awarded until $260,000 has been disbursed. To learn more
