The South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance(SONA) was formed in 1965 in an effort to improve the South Omaha community, to promote interest, education, and involvement of citizens in an effort to secure the best possible neighborhoods for all the residents. In 1996, the South Omaha Neighborhood Action and Response (SONAR) was created to strengthen and support, through unity, the efforts of individual neighborhood organizations to improve the quality of life in South Omaha. Near the end 1997, SONAR and SONA merged to best serve the common goals of improving the quality of life in South Omaha.
SONA has worked hard to create and enhance the viability of the South Omaha community. Some of its accomplishments include:
1. Closing and clean-up of the Wilson Packing Plant
2. City ordinance to require mandatory classes for problem landlords
3. Closing and clean-up of Wally’s Wheels
4. US Justice Department’s “Walk the Talk” project near 30th and S Street
5. March against drugs and prostitution on Leavenworth and Park Avenue
6. Ivy Project – working with City officials and police to plant and grow ivy to reduce graffiti on businesses
7. Annual SONA Awards to recognize outstanding efforts in and of the South Omaha neighborhood area
8. Hosting a candidate forum for City Council candidates in Districts 3 and 4 as well as Mayoral candidates
SONA meets the first Thursday of every month except for January and July at 7:00 P.M. SONA will hold an Annual Meeting open to the public in November. We encourage all South Omaha neighborhood associations to appoint a representative to attend our meetings.
