South Freeport Neighborhood Association

History

The South Freeport Neighborhood Association is just begining to form as of this writing, in June of 2004. The notion of an association has been around for many years, and various associations have come and gone in the area. With the ever increasing opportunities for significant change to South Freeport, a small group of neighbors took the initiative to put together a meeting on the subject in June of 2004. At that meeting, the purpose was to decide, if we should form an association, and if so, what should it do. Of the 50 or so people that attended, the general consensus was that some form of association made sense. After some discussion of what the association should do and how it should function, a steering committee was selected to further consider a the question and lead a meeting on August 12, 2004.

What is it?

As of this writing it is exactly clear what the association is and isn't, but a few ideas that the association could focus on have been put forth: social, issues, and communications. Several people has put forth the idea that the association should not claim to represent all of it's members, as it many issues will not be adequately represented by one position. However, the association can serve as a mechamism to communicate with each other, and among those communications would be awareness of the issues.

Where is South Freeport?

At a one of the first meetings discussing the possibility of establishing a South Freeport Neighborhood Association, it was decided that
South Freeport is "a state of mind, not just a physical place". That is a good definition, as it is not exactly clear where one would draw boundaries around South Freeport. This web site, and the SFNA, does not make an attempt to draw those boundaries.

Who makes up South Freeport?

South Freeport is made up of a much talked about village, for sure. The village "center" might be defined as the Village store and Church area. It also has a working waterfront, with marinas, lobstermen, seafood, tours, and other businesses. But first and foremost, South Freeport is made up by its residents, both in the village as well as those on the outskirts of the village.
